For the past recent years, ppl at Intel has make fun on themselves when they developed Pentium 4. Why? I can't really prove much but AMD has brought in products that trashed Pentium 4, Pentium D or Pentium EE. As a fanboy of Intel, I was upset of it and gave a thought on switching over to AMD processors which are quite popular and dominates the gamers and markets today. Some of the products are Athlon FX series, Athlon X2 series and others.
Not until a few days ago when I stumbled upon a few forums discussing on Intel's newest product to be launched, namely Conroe or Core Duo. Hardly believing on the points that are being discussed, I started to look for some articles regarding to it over the web. Surprisingly, as being claimed by most of the forumers, Core Duo(Conroe) is the latest product by Intel that has been benchmarked by most of the tech reviewers. The results are tremendous, even comparing to the most powerful processor, FX series. They claimed that Conroe produces 20% more performance than a FX60. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that. I browsed even more through the net and found some pictures for proofs. I can't really say whether they are solid or not, but it does gave me a new hope on Intel. Intel has already launched the roadmap for Conroe and said it will be released to the consumers around July or September.
Conroe is based on a dual core architecture and believed was altered from Yonah(another codename for Intel chips). Yonah as being claimed, was on par with FX when it is running on the same speed. Anyway from the benchmarks, Conroe beat FX in most popular games such as Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R, Unreal Tournament and etc. When being compared on media encoding, Conroe finishes faster by an impressive margin.
Systems involved in benchmarking :
The Conroe system was based on an Intel "BadAxe" 975X motherboard modified to supply less voltage. This box had 1GB of DDR2 667MHz memory set at 4-4-4 timings. The graphics setup consisted of a Radeon X1900 XTX and a Radeon X1900 XT CrossFire Edition running together in dual-GPU mode. (We checked around back, and the CrossFire dongle was there as expected.) The Conroe processor itself was running at 2.66GHz. Here's a look at the system properties page. You can see that the system was running Windows XP SP2.
Intel configured a competing AMD-based system for comparison that they said was intended to approximate, as much as possible, where Athlon 64 performance may be by the time Conroe hits the market. To that end, the Athlon 64 FX-60 processor was overclocked to 2.8GHz, and the system's 1GB of DDR400 RAM was set to 2-2-2 timings with a 1T command rate. The same Radeon X1900 CrossFire graphics subsystem was in the AMD box, along with a DFI LANParty RDX200 motherboard based on the Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire Edition chipset.
p/s: I've been looking for a topic to post and discuss for awhile now. Thanks to the mods for inviting me over to join fakap! I think this one would be interesting enough? I must admit I am a fanboy of Intel, yet I am not so biased to ignore others views or reasonable thoughts. Do correct me if I'm wrong though. Sorry coz couldn't provide any pictures, as we know hotlinking is illegal and is just plain wrong.

from what i've read (and remember) amd are releasing an 'am2' chip which will be more on par with the conroe. most motherboard manufacturers have got their 975x boards out and they are all pretty much the same and plain. dfi doesn't even seem to have a lanparty version in the pipeline (according to roadmap), there is only an infinity version.
the 965 boards are coming out for the mainstream users, but these seem a lot funkier and more feature packed, including the use of the newest intel southbridge (ich8). these are the boards that will be officially conroe-ready but most of the 975x's will be compatible even if it means a bios flash.
i have a feeling there will be 975's in future with the new southbridge and that the lack of these combinations at the moment are part of some intel marketing agreement. more likely, i think there will be a 'next batch' of funky 975 boards that are more refined, but not until the companies sell the first whole batch of vanilla flavoured ones they put together quickly to be in the game and sell to all those enthusiasts who just have to have the latest as soon as they come out (and reviewers of course, who should actually get paid by the companies for their input).
for instance, abit have a 'fatal1ty' version (of the aw9d) for gamers and their flagship 'max' for pure overclockers. they are one of the brands that are gonna be doing a larger percentage of intel boards than amd boards. dfi seem to be focusing on amd and when doing intel boards, will use chipsets other than intel's. there is a list somewhere out there in internet land showing the ratio of amd to intel products for each company. most of the companies have a clear bias towards one side, but the only figures i can remember where msi's because they were playing it safe with a 50:50 ratio.
but yes, i'm also very excited about this 975x chip too, for some reason. it comes just at the time i'm gonna build a new rig. if you are interested... here is the one i'm going for (if i don't get persuaded by the aw9d max): asus p5w dh deluxe http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1198&l1=3&l2=11&l3=0
you get the little remote and wifi antenna with it. and the nice looking board with water pipe. the P5V-VM DH http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=0&model=1199&modelmenu=1
is also cool if you can't afford the other one. it uses a via chipset and you get the remote, wifi and integrated graphics too, so you save on the graphics card (unless you're a hardcore gamer. it's conroe ready too.
by the way, nvidia and ati are both working on some hardcore chipsets to bring out the best from these new chips. seems like intel are not going all out into the gaming world, however, badaxe is a real surprise in that it shows intel promoting overclocking. plus a 'badaxe 2' is on it's way... which is pretty exciting.
Thanks STRe, for the info. Here's a link that might suprise on AM2. I'm not sure how far true of the information that they have written but this is one of the tech sites that i've always read from. And yes, I heard about badaxe too, but i've never read about badaxe 2 .. care to provide the link? thanks.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-duo-overclocking.html (this one is of the low-end couterpart)
High end series starts with model E6600, E6700 ... if i'm not mistaken. At lowyat forum, someone has started a bulk which prices for both processors are around RM1650(E6600) and RM2450(E6700).
and thanks for the link. Is that one of the badaxe boards? I'm kindda confused. But yeah, it is one of the finest products from ASUS.
those are good sites... i discovered them only recently since i've been researching new mobos.
yeah, looks like intel's got a nice product on their hands. they've been using amd's reign to build this new chip from scratch, which will probably put amd a technological generation-behind for a little while... unless amd have got some tricks of their own up their sleeve? maybe they are heading down a completely different path.
here's a little discussion: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=4549050
just the first one i could find. it has a couple of interesting points in the opening few posts. seems that conroe really is something and hardcore amd fans are struggling to concede (temporary) defeat. there are a few plans to update the x2 (such as the 65 nm core - a phase intel seems to have been through already).

here's the little news article about bad axe 2. ("bad axe 2" with a space is the best google phrase.)
basically bad axe is the nickname of the 975x motherboard from intel themselves.
it's actually quite funky. very stable too. IIRC it's the follow up to the 955x board, but in a review the testers mentioned they were expecting much more of a boost in performance from the badaxe. intel did solve a few heating problems though and added some heatsinks to the mosfets in the shape of blue flames.
i shouldn't be so easily persuaded by reviews, but before reading it, i was really interested in getting it. something cool about getting and intel motherboard with intel chipset and intel processor. somthing about the matching, even a feeling that this will be the combination that works best together. also, the intel brand feels really 'safe'.
when it comes to the conroes... i'm a couple of generations behind. i aint rich! i'm still rollin' on 478 pin 1.7 ghz! i will probably be going for the cheap pentium d, 805, i think... it's the budget one that can be overclocked from 2.66 to 4 ghz just by changing the fsb from 533 to 800! (i like these budget things that come out later and are 'detuned' versions of higher-end products. like those graphics cards and chipsets which you can turn into the better version with a soldering iron). btw, in one review the most stable overclock was to 3.8... but it's been oc'd past 4g by coalaler...
oh, here is another one... sounds quite effortless http://www.amd3d.com/overclocking/amd3d_exclusive:_taking_the_humble_petniumd_805_past_the_4.0ghz_barrier.html
while i was at it i found this: (celeron beats fx-60!)
http://www.xbitlabs.com/web/display/20060418124251.html
btw, which conroe motherboard would you recommend, if you had to?
that was me, btw
one with ICH8 of course, hehe. I haven't really 'surveyed' any boards. Still using this 478 socket, 2.4C OC'able till 3.2GHz tho. I might get a lower end Conroe for myself, depends on my money 'availability', if u know what i mean. hehe.
